Energy Strategies in Sudan
Sudan is the largest country of the African continent 2,5 million km².
Biomass (wood fuel, agricultural residues and animal waste) utilized as fuel source accounts for ± 87% of total energy consumption. Electricity sector represent ± 1% of total energy supplies (55% from hydro and 45% from thermal generation).
The household sector consumes ± 60% of total electricity consumption.
RE are becoming more important and the renewable strategy is integrated in the Sudanese National Energy Plan.
Although wind pumps have been in use for decades in Sudan on limited scale, large scale application of WE for provision of clean drinking water and sanitation is still in the development phase.
More than 70% of the rural population do not have access to reasonable water supply.
Eastern region of Sudan has very high wind speeds (> 5 m/s).
Northern region has relatively high wind speeds (>4,5 m/s).
A new generation of low-cost wind pumps, simple enough for local manufacturing, is expected to increase utilization of wind machines for water pumping.
