Energy strategies in the Philippines

The Republic of Philippines is dependent on imported oil and coal for most of its energy needs. Energy demand is forcast to grow by ± 9% annually up to 2009 = at least 10.000 MW of new installed capacity is required..

Only ± 65% of the population have access to the grid supplied electric power.
17% of the national power requirements is supplied by generating stations energised by indigenous geothermal resources. The Philippines, which shares a sector of the Pacific's volcanic "Ring of Fire" with neighbouring Indonesia, ranks as the world's second largest developer (after the USA) of this type of energy technology.

The Philippine's government plans expand wind generator installed capacity througout the country, particularly in the blustery north.
