Energy strategies in Thailand

Thailand is committed to development of RES for:

  • reducing dependency on fossil fuels
  • completing rural electrification.

RES still constitute a small proportion of the power generation market in Thailand, but could become an important energy source in future, maybe much more of the potential currently envisaged.
Most significant sources of RE in Thailand: biomass rice husk, bagasse, residues from palm oil and wood industries = 26 million t / year. There are possibility to generate 3.000 MWe solar energy.

Biogas plants at pig farms are expected to contribute substancially to future development of RES, contributing to solve a serious environmental problem.
Expected RE development include: small rooftop solar electric systems, small-hydro generators, biomass-fired plants in rice and palm mills, possibly wind turbines.

Thailand's energy strategy has a strong environmental focus and a view towards energy security through more effective use of domestic energy resources. Incentives and an obligation on power producers are expected to deliver an additional 214 MW of PV by 2011. Target for all renewable energy sources = 21,2% of total energy demand by 2011.
