Australia Renewable Energy Policy in Australia Australia is the 4th largest coal producer in the world, and coal accounts for approx. 44% of total energy needs of the country. Australia is a net exporter of natural gas and is approx. 70% self sufficient for oil. Electricity is produced mainly in coal-fired power stations ( 84% of total electricity production ) and 12% from RES, mainly hydropower. Total energy consumption is expected to grow at a rate of 2,3% per year. Market volume of RE in Australia is expected to be at least AUS$ 3 billion (around US$ 2 billion) by 2010. Australia is a key player in PV as the largest manufacturer per capita, a research leader, and the developer of the current industry-leading "buried contact" cell technology. PV is poised to take a central role in Australia’s RE market. According to the Australian and New Zealand Solar Energy Society (ANZES) 67 km² of solar panels are sufficient to satisfy the entire primary energy demands of Australia.
