Renewable Energy Policy in New Zealand

New Zealand states that it “has the potential to become the first nation
in the world to be solely dependent on renewable energy supplies”, and that energy crops would form a key component of the strategy to achieve this.

Achievement of this objective will:
· help to ensure the continuing availability of low-cost energy by encouraging alternative forms of energy that can compete with non-renewable fuels
· increase the diversity of New Zealand's energy supply - improve energy security
· help to ensure that energy services remain accessible to all members of New Zealand society (particularly in remote areas where conventional energy sources may be expensive)
· minimise adverse effects of energy use, including greenhouse gas emissions.

New Zealand is ‘nuclear free’, and currently over 70% of its electricity is supplied
by hydro power and 6% by geothermal energy.
