Energy strategies in Brazil

In Brazil 30 to 35% of the energy use originates from biomass fuels, notably from wood & bagasse.
Brazil aims to power 80% of its transport fleet with ethanol derived from sugar cane.

Electricity demand is growing at an average rate = 5,6% / year as a result of economic growth & rural electrification. Brazil has a very peculiar electrical generation setup: 85,8% of generated electricity is made by hydro-electric plants.

Approx. 15% of the population, mostly in rural areas, have still no electricity.
Expanding hydroelectricity presents nowadays extreme difficulties because of international credit constraints in Amazon basin. Interest for RES is mainly concentrated on biomass and PV energy: SHS in remote rural areas and other non electrified areas of the country
