Energy strategies in Mexico

Consumption of electricity in Mexico is expected to grow by > 6% a year this decade. Larger contribution to new electricity development: combined cycle gas turbine, large hydro and geothermal energy. PV energy applications are mainly for remote off-grid domestic and professional use.

The Mexico Renewable Energy Program (MREP) is managed by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and is supported by the U. S. Department of Energy (USDOE) Office of Solar Technologies and the Mexico mission office of the U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
Objective of MREP: to promote appropriate & sustainable use of RE technologies in order to:
  • Increase quality and reduce costs of RE technologies (components, systems, and services) by expanding markets for, and providing feedback to, the U.S. and Mexican RE industry;
  • Increase use of clean energy sources to combat global climate change (reducing greenhouse gas emissions) and to protect natural environment by limiting pollution
Use of RE systems in rural off-grid applications are often the most cost-effective way to provide electricity. The program also supports applications that are aimed at providing social, health, and/or educational benefits to the user.

Applications supported include:
  • agricultural water pumping, storage, and distribution (livestock & drip irrigation)
  • radio communications
  • ecotourism
