Austria 2/3 of electricity produced in Austria comes from hydropower. In the field of RES and energy efficiency Upper Austria plays a leading role: >30% of primary energy consumption produced from RES ( 15% hydro energy, 13% biomass, 2% solar energy& others). Despite enormous rates of increase over the past few years, the contribution of solar energy and wind energy are relatively small compared with biomass and hydropower. Austria has committed to the EU to increase the share of RES in its electricity production to 78,1% by 2010.
